A journey into the world of mines and miners of yesteryear

The name Musei Tarvisio (acronym MUTA) is the new name for the Tarvisio museum system and features a single logo for all the museums in Tarvisio.

The village of Cave del Predil, which owes its Italian name to the presence of the mine, is now an example of a company town, where you can visit the Tarvisio Museums, which currently include the Raibl Mine, the Museum of Mining Tradition, and the “Alpi Giulie” Military History Museum, located in Cave del Predil.

RAIBL INTERNATIONAL GEOMINING PARK

The Raibl International Geomining Park with the former mine is located in the village of Cave del Predil, 900 meters above sea level, between Monte Re, Monte Cinque Punte, and Lake Raibl, surrounded by dense beech and spruce forests, pastures, and rocks, offering a unique panorama in Italy. The park is a tourist and educational destination for groups interested in discovering lesser-known areas of the country, rich in history and deep-rooted traditions. It is home to one of the most important European lead and zinc mines, discovered in Roman times and active from the 18th century until 1990, now converted into an eco-museum. The guided tour involves the use of an electric train and lasts about an hour. A journey into the heart of the earth to discover minerals and extraction techniques, but above all to understand the hardships of thousands of miners who worked for centuries in its depths.

MUSEUM OF MINING TRADITION

The museum, housed in the prestigious building that once housed the mine’s management offices, traces the stages of its complex history, which over time has characterized the life of this town and its inhabitants. The tour recounts the story of this valley and its mountains and presents episodes and testimonies of the miners’ work and the events that characterized its development, both in Italy and Slovenia, up to the fight against its closure.

“ALPI GIULIE” MILITARY HISTORY MUSEUM

The “Alpi Giulie” Military History Museum offers a walk through history to understand the territory where important war events took place and where extensive archival documentation (including from different countries), artifacts, and related objects are preserved, covering a period from the Napoleonic Wars to World War II.
